Financing Support for Electronic Health Record Systems

The 2009 HITECH Act provides $19.2 billion in physician incentives paid to participating medicare/medicaid providers who adopt certified Electronic Health Record Systems technology to electronically exchange patients' health information. This means that physicians may be eligible to receive up to $44,000 over a five year period for showing that they are meaningfully using health information technology.

Under the Act, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will pay HITECH incentives on a per provider basis through either medicare or medicaid to offset the cost of EHR purchase and adoption for eligible professionals.
